Low Voltage Directive LVD

The LVD, or Low Voltage Directive - 2014/35/EU applies to all electrical equipment powered from 50 to 1000V ac, or 75 - 1500V dc. The LVD was originally introduced in 1973, and was modified later by the CE marking Directive under the 'New Approach' to facilitate the free movement of goods in the EU.

As with other Directives, it is transposed into the national law of all Member States, and it is also law in a number of new candidate countries as well. LVD Conformity is more than just a legal requirement, it is essential to your business success.

How to comply - due diligence
The approach that we would recommend to demonstrate conformity with the LVD is as follows:

  1. Identify the EN standard that applies to your product. Take care with this first stage as an oversight can be costly. The list below are some of the most commonly used, but there are many others.

    • EN60335-1 2010. Domestic appliances

    • EN60950-1 2006. Computers, business and office equipment.

    • EN61010-1 2010. Scientific and measuring instruments

    • EN60065 2002. Audio and Video equipment

    • EN60204-1 2006. Electrical Equipment of Machines

For a full listing of the LVD standards, download the LVD Official Journal of the European Union here.

  2. Carry out an assessment against the selected standard, and identify any safety tests that may be necessary to prove the product conforms with the standards.

  3. Document the assessment and safety results in a test report. Include product photographs, schematics, parts lists and mechanical drawings to form an LVD technical file. Retain this file in a safe place.

  4. The technical work is now complete. You have met the LVD requirements and can issue an EU Declaration of Conformity for the LVD. Download blank form here

  5. The Quality Management System must maintain the established conformity, have have a change control process to evaluate new developments.

  6. Provided that your product conforms to other applicable EU directives (EMC for example) you may now begin CE marking.
